April and May 2022: Talking About Difficult Things

As May comes to a close, many of us are feeling heartbroken, shaken, numb, angry, and many other emotions as we process the news from Buffalo, NY and Uvalde, TX.   There has been so much loss and grief and violence over the last few years and it can feel overwhelming and hopeless.   If this is how the adults are feeling, it's easy to imagine that the children are feeling it as well.  As the adults, it is important for us to acknowledge those feelings in ourselves and our children, and it is important that we do not shy away from appropriately talking about what's happening.  Children, tweens, and even adolescents often take what they hear and create a narrative about events that may not be accurate. October 2019: Mental Health Awareness

Today, October 10, 2019 is World Mental Health Awareness Day.   The theme this year is suicide prevention.   In the Newton Public Schools, we work hard to make sure that students know who to go to if they are thinking about suicide.  We emphasize the message that we all need to look out for each other, so if a student is worried about another student, they are encouraged to talk with a counselor about their concern.  At Bigelow, we have had numerous students come to the counselors about others and in every situation, even if the student in question was upset that a friend had told their "secret", it has led to each student getting the help and support they need.  Part of the way we reinforce this message is by implementing the Signs of Suicide program each year in the 7th grade.  Please click here to read the blog post written last year about the SOS program at Bigelow. September 2019: Welcome Back To School!

Welcome back to all our returning students and families and welcome to all of our new students and families!  We're so glad you're here and we are ready for another exciting, full, interesting year.  There's an old saying- some attribute it to a Chinese curse- "May your life be interesting."  It's sort of a double-edged blessing/curse, isn't it?  Because interesting doesn't necessarily mean positive or good- it could just as easily be negative and bad.  I think of the middle school years in that context- a double-edged blessing/curse.  Sixth grade through eighth grade is such a full time.  Academically, students are learning critical thinking and executive function skills across all content areas.  Socially, they are learning how to interact, get along and resolve conflict with their peers and the adults in their lives.  Physically, they are growing taller, maturing, and those hormones are often raging.  Emotionally, they are feeling...
